FR1 vs FR2 vs FR3 vs FRX: What Actually Changes (2026)

Updated October 2026FR1 80 V3, FR2 V2 and the 2025 FR3 / FRX on the X3R frame

The quick answer

FR1 vs FR2
Same FR hard shell, same 4-position adjustable cuff, removable liner and premium insoles, and since the 2026 FR2 V2 both have a metal top buckle. The FR1 adds 7-hole Energy Plates, MW9 Titalium bearings (FR2: MW7), Street Invaders 84A wheels (FR2: Downtown 85A) and, on the FR1 80 V3, a new flat 243 mm frame that FR says is 15% lighter (FR2: a rockerable R2 extruded frame).
FR2 vs FR3
The FR2 has the adjustable cuff, the extruded R2 frame and a metal top buckle. The FR3 has a fixed cuff and, since 2025, the new X3R frame. Both now run Downtown 80 mm / 85A wheels on MW7 bearings.
FR3 vs FRX
The FRX is FR's entry model. Both 2025 models sit on the X3R frame with MW7 bearings, and neither has an adjustable cuff. The FR3 gets a fuller closure with FR's new Logo buckle and integrated mounting plates; the FRX keeps a simpler buckle, Velcro strap and laces on a single-position mount.

FR's own advice: the four models differ mainly in the quality of their parts, highest on the FR1 and lowest on the FRX, and all four suit beginners. So choose by how much you will skate and what you want to spend.

What the extra money buys

Adjustable cuffFR2 and FR1
Only the FR1 and FR2 have FR's 4-position cuff button, so you can set the cuff to suit your skating. The FR3 and FRX cuff is fixed.
Energy PlatesFR1 only
FR says the 7-hole plates "allow precise positioning of compatible 165 mm frames to fine-tune balance and responsiveness". The FR2 and FR3 shells have integrated mounting plates instead.
Bearings and wheels
The FR1 runs FR's MW9 Titalium bearings and 84A Street Invaders wheels. The FR2, FR3 and FRX run MW7 bearings.
Frame
The FR2's R2 frame is extruded aluminium. The 2025 FR3 and FRX use the new X3R frame, which FR says sits lower for a lower centre of gravity. One thing to know: the X3R does not fit the older FR3 shell or standard FR brakes, so it needs X3R brakes.

Bigger wheels and Intuition liners

Most models also come with bigger wheels: the FR1 90 (4 × 90 mm), the 310 versions with 3 × 110 mm (FR1 310, FR2 310 V2, FR3 310 V2, FRX 310) and the FR1 325 with 3 × 125 mm. Bigger wheels roll faster and take a little longer to get used to; FR says the FR1 310 needs slightly more skill than an 80 mm setup.

The Intuition and Deluxe versions (for example the FR1 80 Intuition V3) swap in a heat-mouldable Intuition liner.

FR1 / FR2 / FR3 / FRX or FR Neo?

FR Neo is a separate range, not a step in the FR1-to-FRX ladder. The biggest difference is how the shell sits on your foot. The FR1, FR2, FR3 and FRX shell is open over the top of the foot: it is cut away from the toe cap to the straps, so only the liner sits on your instep. It is a wide shell, and the liner is thick when new and packs down over a few sessions. The Neo shell is closed over the forefoot.

If you have had pain at the top of your foot in skates before, go for the FR shell rather than the Neo.

Sizing

Go by your foot length on the size chart of the exact model you are looking at. Every FR product page has "Find my size from your foot length".

Questions we get

Is the FR1 worth it over the FR2?

Choose the FR1 if you want the Energy Plates, MW9 bearings and the lighter flat frame. Otherwise the FR2 has the same shell, the same adjustable cuff and, since the V2, a metal top buckle.

Do the FR3 and FRX have an adjustable cuff?

No. Only the FR1 and FR2 do.

Which is best for a beginner?

FR recommends all four for beginners. The FRX and FR3 are the simplest; the FR2 is the step up if you want the adjustable cuff.

Will my old FR brake fit a 2025 FR3 or FRX?

Not on the X3R frame; it needs an X3R brake.
