How to choose inline skates

Start with how you will skate

Fitness skates are built for comfort over longer rides and come with soft or hard boots. Urban skates usually have a supportive hard boot for city streets, curbs and stairs. Freestyle and slalom skates are made for cones, spins and tricks, mostly on 72 to 80 mm wheels. Aggressive skates roll on small wheels, mostly 57 to 60 mm, with a frame made for grinding in skateparks. Speed skates use a low, stiff boot and big wheels for racing and distance. For children, see our kids skates, sold in sizes that grow with the foot.

Hard boot or soft boot

A soft boot feels like a padded sports shoe: light, breathable and comfortable from the first ride, which suits fitness skating. A hard boot has a plastic shell around the liner that gives more ankle support and control, and it keeps its shape for longer. Most of our skates have hard boots. Read more in hard boots vs soft boots.

Wheel size

Smaller wheels, around 72 to 80 mm, sit lower and turn quickly, so they are easier to control while you learn and better for tricks. Bigger wheels, 90 to 110 mm, roll faster and further and ride more smoothly over rough paths. 80 mm is the most common size in our range and a good all-round choice. Compare sizes in our wheel size guide.

Getting the size right

Measure your foot from the heel to the longest toe and compare that length with the size chart on the product page. Sizes differ between brands and even between models, so the foot length is more reliable than your shoe size. Skates also differ in width: if your feet are wide, start with our wide-fit skates and the wide feet guide. Some models have heat-moldable liners that shape to your foot.

First skates

If you are new to skating, pick a comfortable boot, wheels of 80 mm or smaller and a heel brake, which most fitness and beginner skates include. Aggressive skates and many urban skates have no brake. Our beginner buying guide explains more, and a helmet and pads are worth adding.
